When lineups become available

Confirmed lineups are normally released close to kickoff. Before that point, a match page may show no lineup or a provisional formation. Fixtures Hub labels missing data rather than presenting an unconfirmed team as official.

The starting eleven, substitutes and formation can change after publication if a player is injured during the warm-up or the official team sheet is corrected.

2

Understanding formations

  • 4-3-3 usually describes four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards.
  • 4-2-3-1 uses two deeper midfielders behind three attacking midfielders and one forward.
  • 3-5-2 uses three central defenders, wing-backs and two forwards.
  • A listed formation is a starting structure; teams regularly change shape during a match.
3

Reading match statistics responsibly

Possession shows how long each team controlled the ball, while shots, shots on target, corners and dangerous attacks describe different parts of attacking activity. No single statistic explains the whole match.

Statistics should be read together. A team may have less possession but create better chances, while another may record many low-quality shots without seriously threatening the goal.
