Football League, Cup and Tournament Formats
Understand league tables, group stages, knockout rounds, extra time and penalty shootouts.
League competitions
In a league format, teams collect points across a season. A win is usually worth three points, a draw one point and a loss zero points. Teams are ranked by points, with goal difference, goals scored or head-to-head records used as tie-breakers depending on the competition rules.
Group stages and knockout rounds
Tournament group stages use small league tables to determine which teams progress. Knockout rounds eliminate one team from each tie. Some ties are decided in one match, while others use home-and-away legs and an aggregate score.
When aggregate scores are level, competition rules may use extra time and penalties. Away-goals rules are no longer used in several major competitions, so always check the current rules for the specific tournament.
Why stages matter on a fixture page
- A group-stage match may still allow both teams to progress.
- A second leg must be read together with the first-leg score.
- A final is normally played at a neutral venue.
- Relegation, promotion and qualification places can change the importance of late-season fixtures.
